Under general supervision, attends to patients being transported to and from the hospital. Provides inter-facility patient transfers and responds to 911 field calls. Identifies, assesses, and transports public inebriates. Safely operates department vehicles in emergency and non-emergency modes.Provides support functions for the Paramedic Division.
Essential Functions:
Basic Life Support (25%)
Initiates BLS procedures in accordance with current standards/protocols
Demonstrates a working knowledge of the Denver Metropolitan EMT-Basic Protocols.
Demonstrates a working knowledge of the Paramedic Division’s BLS Policy.Orders Advanced Life Support resources as patient presentation requires.
General Operations (15%)
Provides appropriate patient care during Basic Life Support (BLS) inter-facility patient transfers.
Assists RN with patient care during Critical Care Transport (CCT) inter-facility patient transfers.
In the event of a non-emergent 911 field response, performs assessment of scene to determine the need for auxiliary services such as fire and police department.
Demonstrates an awareness of a changing environment and is able to identify hazards.
Interacts with other personnel and ancillary services with the patient’s best interests in mind.
Documentation (10%)
Completes appropriate patient and daily activity forms.
Submits one complete trip report for each patient encounter and leaves a copy of the trip report at the receiving hospital.
Demonstrates appropriate medico-legal documentation which protects both the crew and the Division.
Billing information is as complete as possible.Face-sheet to be included for in-patient transfers.
Submits incident reports in a prompt, concise and professional manner.
Maintains control of the vehicle at all times, allowing for the unpredictable responses of other drivers.
Uses appropriate lanes and speed with appropriate cornering and braking techniques.
Uses all emergency equipment in accordance with State and municipal laws and regulations.
Abides by standard traffic laws while driving in the non-emergency mode.
Maintains due safety when parking the vehicle at the scene of an emergency, and the use of emergency equipment while standing at such scenes.
Evaluation (10%)
Evaluates the extent of illness or injury and establishes priorities for care following standing orders, or protocols, or as directed by the base physician via voice communications.
Performs full and appropriate assessments including gathering a complete set of vital signs.
Demonstrates an appreciation for mechanism of injury.
Obtains appropriate history.
Utilizes an appropriate workup site
Cognizant of scene times, taking into consideration safety, proximity to the hospital, and current call volume.
Safety (10%)
Follows safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
Approaches all scenes and patients in a safe manner consistent with the environment and patient presentation.
Performs proactive weapons searches of scenes and patients.
Uses all means available to diffuse a hostile and/or emotional situation. If unsuccessful, enlists police assistance, and attempts to avoid physical confrontation if possible.
Uses appropriate and low impact means of restraint.
Demonstrates lifting techniques with a low likelihood for injury to self or peers.
Utilizes "as clean as possible" techniques for invasive procedures and disposes of all contaminated materials and sharps in an approved method.
Follows up with the appropriate resource in the event of exposure to potentially injurious substances.
Equipment and Supplies (10%)
Ensures readiness of ambulance for service, checks mechanical equipment, performs routine preventive maintenance, tests biomedical equipment such as lifepak and suction units for electrical charge and function, checks medical supply stock levels and restocks as necessary.
Inspects and reports any deficiencies to the vehicle braking system, vehicle lights and emergency equipment.
Assures that all biomedical and communications equipment is functional.
Assures that the vehicle is stocked with an adequate supply of medical supplies, and that dated supplies have not expired.
Maintains a safe and aesthetically clean working environment.
Is in service within 15 minutes of the beginning of the shift unless dispatch or a supervisor is notified.
Support Functions (10%)
Provides support functions for the Paramedic Division.
Checking the VST clipboard and duty board on a daily basis for pending assignments.
Assists with moving ambulances and other equipment to the appropriate repair facility as needed.
Assess, order, and stock supplies.
Keeps the ambulance garage clean.
Returns soiled linen and filled sharps buckets to the appropriate locations in the Emergency Department.
Makes routine stops at 911 participating hospitals for equipment left with patients.
Makes sure backup ambulances are cleaned and fueled, and plugged in during times where the temperature is expected to be below 45 degrees.
Occasionally appears in court secondary to functioning as an EMT.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED required.
Work Experience:
One year health care and/or ambulance experience preferred.
Licenses:
Current Colorado Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) Certificate issued by the State of Colorado required.
IV Certification required.
Valid Colorado Class R Driver's License required.
BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of emergency treatment and safety procedures.
Working knowledge of the Denver Metropolitan EMT-Basic Protocols and Paramedic Division’s BLS Policy.
Skill in determining needs in changing environments.
Able to speak with a clear, articulate voice over the radio.

***All hires start at Level 1. Career ladder progression includes job and pay advancement, upon successful completion of established training period, based on appropriate experience. Level 1: $21.87/hr - Level 3: $29.30/hr.
